People had talked about it for years. No one knew much about it. It was just there, no one knew why it existed or who built it. It was just one of those undetermined mysteries of life, like if aliens really exist.

I tried to follow it once, to see where it lead, but it went on forever. Eventually, I turned back never having seen the end. I doubt if anyone has! The graduating class from last year had also tried to get to the end. They didn’t!

I’ve tired to imagine what was at the end a haunted house, a cemetery or perhaps an insane asylum or mansion. Everyone has a different idea about what’s at the end, some are even scared to think about it. I suppose if it was really terrible somehow someone would have to have found out, but then again, maybe not!

It really is an enigma! A road right in the middle of town, and no one knows where it leads. I did a report on it for English class, I looked through all the town’s records and talked to all the elderly citizens who’d been here for a long time. No one knew anything about it! The only thing anybody knows is that it’s a long and winding road to nowhere.

I wonder if at the other end there’s a town that asks itself the same questions we do. I told a friend of mine this idea and she told me maybe I was right, only the town is an exact replica of our town with the same people living the same lives. I told her to stop watching “The X-files” so much. She laughed and continued on her way.

I have to admit that this road plagues me. I think about it all the time. I am intrigued by the unexplained. I plan to study the occult and parapsychology. But that’s beside the point, back to the road. I’ve had dreams that I’m walking down the road with a friend of mine. We walk and walk, never seeing a turn off or break in the trees. We walk for days, then suddenly we come to a clearing. We can’t remember how we got there but we know it took a long time. In the center of the clearing there is a tall spire with an alter beside it. There is a large glowing sphere consciously. As we near the alter an object appears on it. The pale light transcends over us and everything surrounding the clearing vanishes. It’s alarming, yet we remain calm. There’s a bright flash of light and I wake up, feeling tired and groggy.

The dream doesn’t scare me, it’s confusing. I told a friend about the dream, she’s also into the occult and the paranormal, she thought the dream might be a premonition. I’d thought about that conclusion too, yet if it was a premonition what happens after the flash of light. I asked her if she thought I should try to get to the end of the road again, but she didn’t know. I never did follow the road after that, and to this day no one knows what lies at the end.

Maybe one day I’ll go back and follow the long and winding road, but for now I’ll let it stay a mystery for all.
